No signal to monitor

When I start up my 2 year old Inspiron 570, no signal is received by the monitor. The computer seems to start up okay (I heard the skype start up sound, suggesting that it had reached the desktop). I’ve tried using my TV as a monitor and the same problem occurs, so presumably the problem is with the PC rather than with the monitor, but I’d appreciate some help on next steps in diagnosing the problem (video card?) and how to resolve it.

Any idea?
